Three Generations of Family Craftsmanship
During an in-depth conversation with Sardor, a third-generation member of Sleep and Beyond's family-owned business, we learned all about his family, the business, and their merino sheep in the Kyrgyz Republic. Sardor's love for what his family does is evident in every detail. He and his family feel strongly about providing bedding that is high quality, durable, and healthy to sleep on.

Sleep and Beyond was officially incorporated in 1992, but the business was started in the 1970s by Sardor's grandparents. His grandfather would work on the farm and bring wool home for his grandmother to clean, card, and spin into yarn. At the time, they couldn't formally incorporate the business — what is now the Kyrgyz Republic was still part of Russia. It wasn't until the Kyrgyz Republic gained its independence in 1991 that the family could freely make and sell their products internationally, including to customers in the United States. Their perseverance in providing others with healthy, organic wool has been steady and unwavering for over half a century.
Educating a Market That Forgot Where Wool Comes From
During the 1970s, the bedding industry began moving aggressively toward synthetic fibers. Even though synthetics could be made to look and feel like natural cotton or wool, they were made from unnatural petroleum-based materials. This made it difficult for Sardor's family. Synthetics were so popular that Sleep and Beyond had to actively educate customers about where natural wool comes from. Some customers even asked if wool came from a tree.
Through hard work, international travel, and steady perseverance, Sleep and Beyond has grown into a successful third-generation family business and an industry leader in organic bedding materials and products.
The Sheep Behind the Bedding
Every Sleep and Beyond product starts as a happy, healthy merino sheep roaming the mountainous hillsides of the Kyrgyz Republic. The country has twice as many sheep as it does people. Sleep and Beyond sources wool from 250 different farms across the Kyrgyz Republic, every one of them committed to ethical, traditional husbandry.
The sheep are raised in a natural environment with plenty of sunlight, clean grass to graze, and organic feed. They receive only natural, holistic medical care. The animal husbandry standards are among the best in the world, and the farmers take genuine pride in the quality of care they provide.
The land itself is breathtaking — home to one of the world's largest glaciers, vast alpine lakes, and dramatic mountain ranges. Sleep and Beyond's merino sheep have been grazing on chemical-free, natural, untouched land for over a quarter of a century. Notably, the Kyrgyz Republic government never invested in chemical pesticides for its grazing lands, so the wool is naturally pristine before it ever leaves the country.
From Wool to Bedding: Inside the Product Line

Wrapped around each organic wool comforter and organic wool mattress topper is a soft organic sateen cotton cover. The same quality sateen is also used in Sleep and Beyond's luxurious organic cotton sheets. Sleep and Beyond may be best known for their merino wool, but their organic cotton is equally impressive — durable yet unbelievably soft.
The cotton used by Sleep and Beyond carries multiple certifications:
- GOTS certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) by Control Union
- Oeko-Tex 100 certified
Certifications That Back Up Every Claim
Sleep and Beyond doesn't cut corners on certifications. The company has pursued and maintained every major credential available for organic bedding and ethical sourcing:
- USDA Certified Organic wool — every fleece meets US organic standards.
- Woolmark label — requires stringent testing for quality, chemical and oil content, and product performance.
- Fair Trade Certified — ensures fair labor and pay practices for the farmers behind the wool.
- ISO 9000 certified — quality control, fair trade labor, and environmentally friendly practices verified by an international standards body.
To maintain their organic certifications, Sleep and Beyond uses only natural, unscented, vegetable-based soaps when washing the wool. And because wool is a natural flame retardant, there's no need to apply chemical flame retardants to their organic toppers or comforters. The wool itself meets federal flammability standards without a single added chemical.
The Mission That Drives It All
Above anything else, Sleep and Beyond's mission statement says it all: "To be the industry leader by supplying our customers with the highest quality organic bedding at the most competitive prices, with exceptional customer service and on time delivery."
Sleep and Beyond doesn't cut a single corner to deliver leading organic bedding. Their genuine passion shines through in every product, and the result is a fully transparent, high-quality company that we're proud to partner with.
