As we were discussing the future of our partnership, I raised a concern that comes up often — the ongoing push from customers for organic certifications on each raw material in a mattress. For the wool to carry an organic certification, the entire island would need to be certified — an impossible standard. Yet pesticides and herbicides are not used on the Texel countryside, so in effect this wool is organic, or better than organic — it is pure. These are happy sheep, living the life a sheep should. According to Marie, some certified organic farms today keep sheep in small pastures or indoors specifically to achieve organic certification. I also asked why they couldn't obtain an organic certification on their latex foam. Green Sleep sourced their rubber from LSK Lamifoam, a factory in northern Malaysia, and held exclusive rights to this foam in North America — meaning no other mattress brand could use it. LSK Lamifoam supports the local economy through independently owned small plantations. Each farmer collected latex milk from his trees and walked to the factory weekly to sell his yield. With over 100 small rural plantations contributing, an organic certification was financially out of reach for individual farmers — but once again, pesticides and herbicides are not used in this region. Green Sleep worked with this factory for over 20 years and could verify something no certification can fully capture: this latex holds up to the test of time. This was a mattress built to last.
