Green Sleep: Standards of Purity beyond ‘Organic’ Labels
Michael The Natural Sleep StoreFor years, lying down on a Green Sleep mattress was heavenly. The feel of the organic cotton velour was luxurious, and the natural rubber conformed perfectly to the body. Green Sleep was the definition of luxury, quality, and purity — and we were proud to carry them. While Green Sleep is no longer part of our collection, the philosophy they championed — that purity matters more than paperwork — continues to guide every brand we carry, including Savvy Rest. Green Sleep's story is still worth telling, because it shaped our understanding of what truly pure sleep products look like.
When Marie, the owner of Green Sleep, paid us a visit, she had a wealth of knowledge to share. As we were discussing the future of our partnership, I raised a concern that comes up often — the ongoing push from customers for organic certifications on each raw material in a mattress. Marie explained that Green Sleep's goal was "purity", even more so than "organic." Purity in the sense that materials come from the natural, undisturbed environment, acquired in a way that promotes well-being and a sustainable partnership with the locals and the land — going well beyond what an official certified organic status requires.
As mentioned in our earlier blog post on Green Sleep, their wool could not be certified organic because the sheep are raised on Texel Island, off the coast of Holland, where they are free to roam the entire island. For the wool to carry an organic certification, the entire island would need to be certified — an impossible standard. Yet pesticides and herbicides are not used on the Texel countryside, so in effect this wool is organic, or better than organic — it is pure. These are happy sheep, living the life a sheep should. According to Marie, some certified organic farms today keep sheep in small pastures or indoors specifically to achieve organic certification. As a store that has always been deeply concerned with animal welfare, this distinction matters enormously.
I also asked why they couldn't obtain an organic certification on their latex foam. Green Sleep sourced their rubber from LSK Lamifoam, a factory in northern Malaysia, and held exclusive rights to this foam in North America — meaning no other mattress brand could use it. LSK Lamifoam supports the local economy through independently owned small plantations. Each farmer collected latex milk from his trees and walked to the factory weekly to sell his yield. With over 100 small rural plantations contributing, an organic certification was financially out of reach for individual farmers — but once again, pesticides and herbicides are not used in this region. Green Sleep worked with this factory for over 20 years and could verify something no certification can fully capture: this latex holds up to the test of time. This was a mattress built to last.
The pursuit of harmony in the growing, raising, and harvesting of materials — going above and beyond what certifications require — is a standard we believe all great organic mattress makers share.
Five things distinguished Green Sleep from other organic mattress manufacturers, and these same qualities are what we look for in every brand we carry today:
- A Legacy of Purity. For over 20 years, Green Sleep was intent on making the purest mattress possible. Their dedication to purity went beyond the value of a certified organic label.
- Stability. They used the same trusted sources for over 20 years, ensuring consistent, top-quality materials in every mattress — no shortcuts.
- Research. Yearly trips to suppliers kept them close to the source. Even with decades of consistency, they remained open to finding superior raw materials whenever they emerged.
- Exclusivity. Green Sleep was the only mattress to use their signature organic cotton velour and LSK Lamifoam. The velour — soft beyond description — was certified organic, though competitors sometimes claimed otherwise. People tried to replicate it and did not succeed.
- Ergonomic Design. Their mattresses were engineered to provide optimal body support, and the materials proved their durability through decades of real-world use.
Green Sleep's legacy is a reminder that the most meaningful quality standard is often the one a company sets for itself — not the one printed on a certification. If you're searching for an organic mattress that holds to this same level of purity and craftsmanship, we invite you to explore Savvy Rest organic mattresses at The Natural Sleep Store. Handcrafted from natural latex, organic wool, and organic cotton, Savvy Rest is built on a foundation of transparency and longevity — an investment in the kind of deep, healthy sleep that only truly pure materials can deliver.
