Why Choose a Natural Wood Bed Frame

Solid wood has been used to construct bed frames throughout written history. Solid wood bed frames have stood the test of time, and their durability is unmatched. Up until the middle of last century, when you bought a piece of furniture it was understood that it would last your lifetime.   In modern day society, furniture is often replaced time and time again. This is partly due to ever changing styles and personal preferences, and partly due to the inferior quality of furniture made, which requires it to be replaced. Therefore, the standard of making furniture that lasts a lifetime is rarely prioritized by mainstream bed frame manufacturers.

The natural wood bed frames that we sell at The Natural Sleep Store have been carefully curated to offer heirloom quality products that are made from solid wood and healthy finishes. We feel honored to offer a line of products that are effectively “custom made” without charging a high custom price. Traditional furniture manufacturing is a labor of love, no one manufacturing these products is getting rich quick. Their motivations come from a different place, a love of their craft. Our partners, such as Nomad Furniture, Savvy Rest, Pacific Rim, TFS Honest Sleep, and Maple Corner Woodworks are passionate about making bed frames naturally, utilizing the highest quality domestic hardwoods paired with the best natural finishes, and creating an outstandingly reliable product.

Two main factors should be considered when researching what type of product has the least impact on the environment: whether or not the materials being used are renewable and sustainable, and the duration the product will be used.  The more often you need to purchase a product, the less environmentally friendly it is as there are more materials being used and discarded. The lifespan of solid wood furniture is much longer than furniture that is made of engineered wood. For example, when solid wood furniture gets a scratch or the finish wears, it can easily be refinished or touched up, especially using the natural finishes that we offer. In contrast, products made with particle board or plywood veneers have very little ability to be touched up or refinished.  Once a product made from engineered wood has acquired a decent amount of wear, it is often disposed of and replaced, thus being a burden on the environment. Engineered wood products tend to have a greater carbon footprint being manufactured overseas. Transporting these products to America is not carbon efficient, especially compared to transporting products made domestically. In addition, the chemical processes used to produce engineered wood creates byproducts. These byproducts must be disposed of, and end up causing great harm to the environment.

Contrary to popular belief, domestic hardwoods are renewable if grown and harvested correctly, therefore leaving a much smaller impact on the environment than engineered wood products. Chemicals are not added to solid hardwood in order to manufacture it into a bed frame. Our natural bed frame manufacturers typically use wood grown sustainably and in the US, reducing the carbon footprint of product transportation.

Solid woods are much more difficult to work with, and require a deeper understanding of the craft. Because of this, they are not used as frequently as engineered woods. Engineered woods are very predictable, more cost efficient to produce, and easy to use for large automated operations. Society has moved from using products from the earth to products that have been heavily processed. In this process, many chemicals are added, and most things are far from natural.  We are passionate about helping people fit natural options into their lives for multiple reasons. Not only is it how humans were intended to live, but it is also much healthier. Unlike products that are made with particle board or plywood, our natural wood bed frames do not contain toxic glues, formaldehyde, and other chemicals that outgas into the air and pollute indoor air quality.

Paints and finishes originated from minerals, milk, plant based oils, and beeswax, but have become highly processed in modern day society. Again, we return to nature by having many natural finish options for our solid wood bed frames.  For example, linseed oil and hemp oil are used as a standard finish by many of our solid wood bed frame manufacturers.

Natural wood bed frames are a healthy choice and a sustainable product from start to finish, including a low carbon footprint, reducing toxins in the environment, and greater product lifespan.
